Visitation Guidelines

  • Juveniles (under 17 years of age) that are related to the inmate may visit only if accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. The parent, legal guardian accompanying the juvenile must have a current and valid photo identification card and may be required to show proof of guardianship of the juvenile. If a juvenile visitor not related to the inmate wishes to visit, their parent or legal guardian must accompany them. Proof of emancipation must be provided, if applicable.
  • Visitors will be required to check in at Master Control and be signed in for visitation at least thirty minutes prior to the scheduled visiting time.
  • During regular visitation there is no right of privacy. Your visitation period is monitored and recorded.
  • Contact visits are normally limited to privileged (attorney, law enforcement, prosecutors, etc.) and professional visitors (clergy, psychologist, medical, etc.) or others as designated and approved by the Detention Commander or designee. During a contact visit, no person or device will normally monitor, record, or in any other manner interfere with the confidentiality of the visit, except for viewing through windows or openings to ensure the safety of the visitor and inmate.
  • Privileged visitors may be allowed to visit inmates at times other than regular visiting hours. Privileged visits may be denied when preparing inmates for court, serving meals and during lockdown or emergency situations. Privileged visitors who want to bring or send additional individuals into the facility to visit inmates, such as investigators, may do this by obtaining a court order or gaining prior approval from the Division Commander.
  • Inmates planning a visit from visitors coming from distances over 150 miles away may request an extended visit or an unscheduled visit. The Division Commander must approve all such visits in advance. When these visits are approved, the inmate is notified so the visit can be scheduled on the designated date.

Visitation Rules and Regulations are as follows:

  • No smoking will be allowed by any inmate or visitor while in the visiting room.
  • Only three (3) visitors at a time per inmate will be allowed in the visiting room.
  • Only persons seventeen (17) years of age or older, with proper identification, will be allowed in the visiting room, except in the case of a juvenile accompanied by an adult.
  • Recklessly, intentionally, or maliciously destroying, or tampering with County Property will generally result in prosecution.
  • No person who appears to be intoxicated or under the influence of drugs or narcotics will be permitted in the visiting room.
  • A warrant check is done on all visitors. A visitor with an outstanding arrant is subject to arrest and denial of visitation.
  • No visitor will record or photograph the visitation area, the inmate, or any part thereof.

Any violation of the rules of visitation will result in immediate termination of the visit, and inmates may be subject to disciplinary procedures. Visitors who violate rules and regulations shall be subject to removal from authorized visitation list and criminal prosecution for any associated law violation.

Inmate Mail/Commissary

The Platte County Detention Center accepts incoming non-legal mail in the form of postcards-only. This practice provides a safer, contraband-free environment for both inmates/staff. Outgoing mail is not similarly restricted. All mail not meeting the standards listed below will be returned to sender unopened. Requests for exceptions to the postcard-only requirement (books, family pictures, etc) must be made in writing by an inmate and approved prior to the mailing in of non-postcard materials.

Related requirements are as follows:

  • Postcards must be of reputable manufacture and may not be homemade.
  • Postcards may be no larger than 4.25 inches by 6 inches and must be properly addressed; must contain the sender’s name/return address & the inmate’s name and cell assignment in addition to the Platte Co. Detention Center address listed below.
  • Metered post cards are preferred and will generally be delivered unaltered; stamped mail will have the stamps removed which will likely damage some portion of the postcard.
  • Postcards containing stickers, adhesive labels, watermarks, stains, lipstick, and/or any other suspect alteration/adulteration will be returned to sender.

Please see our Commissary Information page for details regarding inmate commissary funding.
